My Favorite Pages of TBWCD by Thi Bui
In The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui, there we a lot of very beautiful and powerful pages. My favorites of these were pages 40 and 41. I sort of consider these to be one page because they look like a connected picture to me, where Thi is standing in one, staring at a picture of her family's past in the other. You cannot quite see her face in the picture, but I can tell by the words, "seeking and origin story/ that will set everything right," that her face might hold an expression of longing or hope. She wants to connect with her family, and learning about their stories might be her best option. The other reason that I like these pages so much, and go back to them again and again, is because they remind me of so many other books, plays, movies, and musicals that I love, where the main character faces some sort of internal struggle, and looks back on their past to find answers/ reasons for it. There are several reasons why these pages remind me of this. The first is the words: they are like an internal narrative, and the way they are scattered on the page makes it seem as though they are spinning around in her head. The picture also reminds me of images and memories spinning around in her head, because of the chaotic, and almost unfinished quality of the drawing. It is beautiful. These pages really draw me into the story.
